DOHA • Ethiopian community in Qatar will celebrate their nation's ‘Millennium' in Qatar on September 11, 2007.
Ethiopia follows the Julian calendar and for the country, the year 2000 begins only on September 11, seven years after much of the world marked the beginning of the 21st century.
A meeting of the community members held here last week decided to mark the country's year-long celebrations with a variety of breath-taking entertainments, cultural shows, traditional music concerts, traditional food festival, coffee ceremony and traditional fashion show.
The community also organized a signature event to keep a record of Ethiopians residing in Qatar during the new millennium.
The ‘honorary signature book' will be sent to the National Millennium Council, which is the highest authority overseeing the event, to be kept in the museum of the millennium in Ethiopia as a treasure for a generation to come, said Nebiyou Gezahagne, Chairman of Ethiopian Community in Qatar.
"The upcoming third millennium will play a significant role to enhance the interrelation of Ethiopian and friends of Ethiopia.
“The community expects the new era to be start up with new change within the community. The Millennium committee, being constituted under the Ethiopian Community, will Endeavour to enhance the new face of Ethiopia that has been hidden from the rest of the world", Gezahagne added.
Ethiopia is a country that has never been colonized and the place where the biggest river on planet earth Nile originates, he said.
The opening ceremony of the Ethiopian millennium was attended by the representatives of Sudan and Somalia communities as well as the sponsors of the millennium event.

Millennium celebration coordinating committee formed in Qatar
Addis Ababa, April 3, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - Ethiopians and Ethiopian origins residing in Qatar formed Ethiopian millennium celebration coordinating committee.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Ethiopian News Agency on Tuesday that the coordinating committee comprises four sub committees.
